Happy New Year Amped world! What a better way to start out the new year than with new music! Well, Tonight Alive is here to please, and please they do with all sorts of jams and guest artists! So let’s get into it!
The album starts with a banger in “Book of Love” which starts with melodic lyrics from frontwoman Jenna McDougall and hard beats from drummer Matt Best, really setting the tone for what’s to come on the rest of the record.
The next track to really stick out, and what I’m sure to be a fan favorite is “Disappear” featuring the always lovely Lynn Gunn frontwoman from the band PVRIS, a collaboration that has been many fans dreams since both bands exploded onto the scene. Jenna shares “Disappear is a song about the escapist inside all of us. As you can expect from Tonight Alive, the lyrics discuss freedom, but this time with a flavor of anonymity and detachment. Disappear was written with the intention of sounding neither like PVRIS or Tonight Alive and aimed to capture the sonic imagery of a long straight highway out of your comfort zone.”
Jenna dissected her darkness to get a deeper understanding of who she really is and what she truly loves and it provided her the power and confidence to push herself to remember at the core, why she loves music. McDougall shares, “The album is called Underworld and I named it that because it reflects the ugly parts of me that I wasn’t ready to see until now.” One song, in particular, stands out to me as an honest reflection, a true anthem for being unique and a realization of Jenna’s true self. It honestly gives me a different emotion every time I listen to it.
Another song that stands out to me is the song “For You”. For whatever reason, this song just takes me back to the early 2000’s MTV TRL vibes. It’s a total jam that I’m sure will have fans blasting with their significant others down the highway this summer. Maybe it’s the hopeless romantic in me, but this is one of those songs that while you’re listening to it one special person pops into your head.
Okay, as we start to wrap up this review we have to go to the one track that I can’t be the only one who got intrigued when seeing the name Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour) pop up on the track listing. The song starts slow and builds to this awesome ballad that had Jenna and Corey’s voices interchanging and made for the absolute cherry on top of an amazing album.
My only hope is to hear Shane Told come out and sing Corey’s vocals on stage with Tonight Alive’s upcoming tour with Silverstein kicking off in Cleveland, OH on January 19th.
